RESOURCE ROOM POLICY
Purpose of the Resource Room: The purpose of the resource room is to provide students who have a documented disability and have an IEP to receive individual assistance, a quiet place to work and to provide modifications when necessary. The majority of the time the student should be remaining in the regular education classroom. Many times modifications can be made ahead of time, and the student can stay in the classroom and receive the modified test or assignment with their peers. If you need a test or assignment modified please e-mail it to the teacher monitoring the student with ample time to make the modifications.
Who can use the Resource Room: Any student who has an IEP can use the resource room. However, depending on their particular disability will determine where they go. If the student works with the ED teacher they will utilize their assistance when appropriate.
When can students use the Resource Room: We realize that assistance may be needed any time of the day, but it is imperative you and/or the student give the resource teacher pre-warning, preferably one day’s notice before sending students. Pre-warning can take various forms, but please make sure the teacher receives the notification. For many resource hours this is also the teacher’s prep hour. We have also informed the students that they should be informing us before they come down. Furthermore, the students should not be sent to the Resource room for disciplinary reasons unless that is part of their IEP.
Modifications used during the Resource Room: If a modification is allowed it will be mentioned in the IEP. This information is generally found on the Supplemental Aids and Services Page, which you should receive a copy of the modifications at the beginning of the semester for each student who has one in their IEP. This list is generated by the IEP team, and they can be allowed, but they do not have to be offered in every situation. The student should always try to the best of their ability. If you are having difficulty with a student’s motivation to complete a task please let the case manager know. A modification is a variation of how something is presented to a student or how the student is required to demonstrate their knowledge or mastery of a concept. A modification can also include an adjustment in pacing, environment, assistive technology, grading and communication with the student and parents. Modifications should be considered per individual per task with their academic strengths and weaknesses in mind. The intent of a modification is not to give a student an unfair advantage in completing a task. However, if an individual’s disability will prevent him from displaying his knowledge or inhibit him from completing a task due to their disability a modification should be used. When the task is presented the teacher and the LD teacher should discuss which modifications should be allowed. When the task is sent down to the resource room, please communicate on the test or assignment which modifications you feel are necessary for the student to complete the task to the best of his ability. The special education teacher will call you if he/she feels additional modifications are necessary. If extended time is needed the special ed teacher will attempt to work with the student the same day especially if they receive direct support from us in a basic course. The student should not miss more than one class period, and if additional time needs to be utilized it should be done before or after school and this needs to be set up by the student.
